Back by popular demand! Registration is now open for the 2017 season!

Our CSA will operate very similar to that of last summer. Pick up times will remain from 4-6pm on Friday afternoons here at our house, or 7am-noon on Saturdays at our booth at the Gettysburg Farmers' Market on The Pub quadrant.

The first pickup will be on May 27th this year, and it will end on August 26. As with last year, the program will run for 14 weeks, of which, you can choose any 13 to receive your share.This is done so that, if you need to be away on vacation, you will not pay for a week that you won't be available to pick up your share.

We grow over 40 varieties of fresh vegetables, plus strawberries, black raspberries, peaches and apples for your family to enjoy.

We will also continue to offer 2 sizes of shares again this year ... the smaller one designed for a household of 2 -3 people, and the large share designed for families of 4-6. We have several "small" families who opt for the larger share, then freeze their extras during the summer to enjoy during the winter. And, as before, we will also have available larger quantities of produce for additional purchase if you would like to do any preserving.

Share prices for this season are $285.00 for the small share, and $310.00 for the large share. Please note there will be a $10/share discount if payment is received by May 15th.
Spring is springing here at Swartz's! We've been getting seeds started for our spring crops and plan to get started planting in the high tunnels this week, hoping to get carrots, beets, lettuce, spinach, radishes and pak choi seeds in the ground.

As part of our plans for this year, we are once again offering a CSA for those interested in getting fresh produce each week throughout the summer.

This year, our program will begin with the first pick up on Friday, May 27th and run through Friday, August 26th. As a convenience for our customers, you may choose any 13 of the 14 weeks for your pick up. This allows you to miss one week in the event you are on vacation. All we ask is that you let us know at least one week in advance of the week you would need to miss.

Shares may be picked up at our farm on Friday's from 4-6pm, or Saturday's at our booth at the Gettysburg Farmers' Market on The Pub quadrant.

We also would like to continue offering the opportunity for you to use your share value to purchase larger quantities of produce for freezing or canning. For example, last year we offered members the option to use their share value to get several dozen ears of sweet corn instead of receiving their regular share, and another week to get black raspberries (when they were in the peak of the season), instead of the usual assortment of vegetables.
The cost for the CSA will remain the same as last year .. small shares, recommended for 2-4 people, are $275.00 and large shares, recommended for 4-6 people, are $300.00

New and exciting this year, we should be harvesting peaches from our own trees, so we are planning to be able to offer them in the shares.

And, as it was last year, any CSA members who shops with us at the Gettysburg Farmers' Market on the square on Saturday mornings will receive 10% off their purchases (only at our stand.)

We would appreciate your commitment by April 15th, which allows time for us to finalize our planting schedules.

I spent some time this past winter thinking about starting a CSA. What, you might ask, is a CSA? It stands for Community Supported Agriculture. In a nutshell, you as a participant purchase a "share" which is a weekly pick up of a pre-made box of produce grown by us, that you will get for 13 weeks.

Our goal is have participants committed to the CSA by May 15th and the actual program will begin the first week of June and run through the end of August.

They are both true work horses. The older one, purchased 12 years ago, does all of our "dirty work." Anything that needs moved that is not food related gets hauled on this gator. This includes firewood, shovels, rakes, chainsaws, gas cans, straw, etc. It has 1,200 hours logged on the engine and still runs great. We've had to replace the tires, not because they were worn out, rather they kept getting thorns in them from young locust trees. Other than that, we've only had routine maintenance expenses.

After a lot of thinking, planning and number crunching, we decided it was in our best interest to purchase a second Gator. Our newer Gator, purchased spring of 2014, only hauls produce harvested from the fields. Therefore there is no chance of contamination to the produce.
We are very grateful for having both of these gators. They save us a lot of time and work!

As the end October came to a close, it marked the end of the market season for 2014. No more 4:30 am wake up alarms, no more late nights the night before market tying up loose ends - washing, bagging, or weighing produce, no more lugging canopies, tables and crates of freshly harvested produce.

And no more steady income.....

However, there is still a lot of work to be done on the farm.

The fields need cleaned up ... rows of plastic need gathered, irrigation lines need taken up, fields need mowed, the strawberries need covered before freezing weather sets in, and, the entire irrigation system needs drained and the fertilizer injector needs removed and stored in the basement for the winter. All of these jobs need to be done before the ground freezes.

And, it's time to start planning for 2015. The seed catalogs should start arriving in the mail boasting of new varieties to try, we have to figure out a crop rotation for the fields, and I am still hoping to get an annual rye cover crop established on the open ground. There are still a few things in the field yet to harvest.

We have tomatoes, romaine lettuce, kale, red beets, cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli growing in the high tunnels. We are experimenting with growing the romaine over the winter. If this winter is not as brutal as last winter, we should be able to have some most of the winter. Our experiment is to see how long it will take to mature since the amount of daylight is much lower over the next few months than during the summer.

Just a little tomato humor to begin your November. :)

And speaking of tomatoes...... we were very concerned about freezing temperatures Sunday night, so we decided we should pick through the tomatoes again. It's amazing to still be getting 75 lbs of tomatoes in one picking..... BECAUSE it's early November... in south central Pennsylvania! Once again I gotta say that I love my high tunnels! Temperatures are to be in the mid-60's this week with overnight lows in the 40's, so hopefully we'll get another 75 lbs or so later in the week.

The weather was beautiful today and now that we're getting caught up on our pumpkin and fall ornamental harvest, it was time to get the garlic planted. We are planting one softneck and one hardneck variety. It is nice to have the scapes from the hardneck to sell at market, but also nice to be able to sell some garlic braids from the softneck.

What we do all winter? It's a question we get quite often this time of year. Winter is still a very busy time for us. Here is a list of some of the jobs we've been working on:

1. The first job on our list was for Larry and Caleb to make sure we have enough firewood for next year. We are fortunate that other local farmers allow us to cut up some of the apple trees they have pushed out to make room for new plantings. We love to burn apple wood!

2. Larry has also been cutting back some fence rows so the trees are not shading our fields.

3. Normally we get one good cold week a winter, but the rest of the winter isn't as bad. Not this year! With temperatures in the single digits or even -4 on the coldest morning, for most of January, we had to work to keep fresh water to our chickens. Larry would go to the hen house at 5:00 am to gather any eggs so they wouldn't freeze, then Caleb would check them again at 7:00 am before heading to catch the bus for school.

Of the 25 eggs gathered this particular morning, 13 were frozen and cracked open. This encouraged an earlier egg gathering time.

3. About once a week, Larry and Caleb bring a gator load of wood to the porch. They had to time the deliveries to work around the many snow and ice storms we had.

4. Larry thought he would put the chains on our John Deere 60. This is the tractor that was my Uncle Mike's, and we bought it at his farm sale after he passed away a couple of years ago. More on that story another time, but at the sale we were also able to buy the set of tire chains for this tractor. It's amazing how much more traction it has in the snow!

5. Our biggest winter job is pruning the black raspberries. With the firewood job getting done mid-January, Larry decided it was time to start pruning. We both enjoy pruning.... you can really see how much you've accomplished when you look back over the row where you've already pruned.
Fortunately for us, we had an underground tile drain running thru a portion of our property that ran all year. The easiest, cheapest solution to our water needs was to bury a 1,000 gallon tank in line with the tile drain. The water would fill the tank and excess would flow thru the overflow pipe and continue on its way. A small submerged pump and a pressure tank that sat at ground level and connected to a 1" line and we were able to get water where we needed it. Then we connected 'trickle tape' to the 1" line for each row of crop we needed to irrigate. Even in the driest year, we could still count on that tank filling at least once per day...which meant we had 1,000 gallons or more to serve our needs.

This solved our problem....temporarily. At first we were looking for water only for the strawberries. Then we added the black raspberries, tomatoes and finally sweet corn. What we found was we didn't have enough water or enough pressure to irrigate everything and everywhere we needed.

So early last summer we drilled a well. To me this sounded like gambling: I was going to spend a lot of money with no guarantee of hitting the jackpot. Fortunately we live in an area with high success of good producing wells. We hit a good water supply at 160 feet. *see my happy face* Thirty gallons per minute is plenty of water for our small farm. Now I have both enough water and enough pressure to go anywhere on the farm.

The second part of our water project was to bury a 2" PVC pipe through part of the farm. We were finally able to do this a few weeks ago when we had nice weather for a few days. From the pipe, we have 15 risers at various places that we can connect a 1.5" tubing that lays on top of the ground and we connect the 'trickle tape' into. The trickle tape fills with water, then every 12" along the tape is a small slit that water seeps out of. This allows us to water our crops slowly so the water seeps into the ground where needed and there is no runoff. Plus, the water is where the roots are, so the water is only applied where needed.

This is a huge step forward in our management. From one central location I can inject fertilizer into the line that will feed our crops for healthier plants and increased yields. We have water where and when we need it. Watering the crops is no longer a chore of being able to water just a few rows at a time. We will be saving electricity by being able to irrigate a larger area all at once instead of watering smaller areas over several days. Hooray!
That seems to be the way it's been the past several weeks. Planting in the high tunnel didn't happen when I hoped it would. The crops that are planted are not growing as fast as I would like them too (due to too many cloudy days and temperatures being too cold.) I have an irrigation project to complete, but need a few days with temperatures above 50 degrees to be able to glue the pipes together.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">
But today, things seemed to happen. We've decided to construct one of our old high tunnels. (This was a homemade tunnel. We would put it up every spring and take it down every fall. That way we could plant tomatoes in it every year, but by moving it to a different location we didn't have to worry about disease build up in the soil.) Our 30' x 96' pemanant high tunnel isn't big enough to plant everything I'd like to plant in it, kindof like the machinery shed is never big enough to house all of the equipment! The homemade tunnel is 12.5' x 80'. I will be able to plant two rows lengthwise in the tunnel. My plan is for one of the rows to be zucchini and the other peppers. About two weeks ago I was able to drive the ground stakes in that support the PVC pipes. Today we were able to get the PVC pipes on as well as connect the tracking that holds the plastic in place. It became too windy to get the plastic on today, so we are hoping to get that done in the coming days.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">
Also today, we planted our newly ordered red raspberry plants. We have never grown red raspberries before, but thought it was something we wanted to expand to.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">
I was able to get the pepper and cucumber seeds started this week, however, due to a miscommunication, the grape tomatoes I had started were left in the wrong place overnight and froze. Back to the starting point for those.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">
I received a phone call this week from an organization that hosts a Thursday Farmers' Market. I am still checking into the details for that, but am hoping it will work out. This will make a fifth market we will attend this summer. We are preparing for our third year at the Gettysburg Farmers' Market on the square on Saturdays, and our second year at Cross Keys Village/The Brethren Home on Tuesdays. New this year, we are attending two markets associated with the Adams County Farmers' Markets. One is on Wednesdays at the Rec Park in Gettysburg, and the other on Saturdays at The Outlets of Gettysburg. (See sidebar for more information!)
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">
The forecast for the coming week has temperatures in the upper 60's! We will continue to plant onions, will pick up tomato plants for planting in the tunnel, need to plant the asparagus plants that just arrived and prepare for hosting a belated family Easter Dinner celebration.
